Either I'm getting old or I'm an idiot.

I'm not sure on the new fangled computer controlled bikes, but on the ones with out the computers; you can also risk blowing up/overheating your coil if you leave your ignition switch on for too long.
 
On new H-D motorcycles equipped "especially" with throttle by wire...the ECM "computer" takes a snapshot of throttle position and all settings. You should use the engine kill switch once you have throttle off and are ready to turn ignition off...this gives the ECM time to store the steady state data before you turn the ignition off.:s
