Guys, I hope to do a tour sometime within the next couple of years in the USA. The escorted Eagle Rider "Route 66" Tour appeals to me however, I am keen to hear of any experiences or alternative suggestions. I will be taking my other half with me so would also appreciate opinions from any of the ladies out there also.

Welcome. :hii
Ditch the escorted tours, Buy yourself a bike mounted GPS unit and program the places you want to see into it and enjoy the ride, spend as long as you want at anyplace along the trip, travel when you want & sleep when you must!

thats a dream of most of us i look at a web site called the mother road lots of great info as not very pc says go it alone meet real people in real towns and soak up the atmosphere too much to do so little time

Interesting feedback so far guys, would like to see some more opinions. The route 66 tour does seem a pretty packed and your suggestions to dump the tour and take a little more time to enjoy the surrounding's sounds good. We will only have the 2 weeks and really want to enjoy our holiday. One of the other options was to go to Vegas and do the (here we go again) Canyon Tour which would give us 8 days on a scoot and the rest to enjoy Vegas, again if we adopt the dump the tour policy we could probably enjoy ourselves just as much. There is just so many places to go and visit, Yosemite National Park is somewhere else I would like to see also. Thanks to everyone so far but keep the suggestions coming guys. Ride safe.

Ok, another dump the tour vote here. GPS is great, but so is the "where does this road go" idea. I do carry a map in case I want to know where I am in relation to say Tibet!
If you live in the states then a "let's go down this road" ride is the only way!!
But for a fellow rider for another country with a limited time to travel and a list of places to see the GPS ride is the way to go.
My wife and 2 of her friends spent 2 weeks last May traveling around the southwest with just a GPS a Master Card and a Colt 45. Had a great time, everyone was really nice to them along to way.
They spent a few nights planing the trip and programing the GPS and away they went!! :a

I would suggest the Scenic Drive in the San Juan Mountains. COLORADO. Various roads running through the western San Juan Mountains allow for a scenic loop drive of about 245 miles, visiting all major towns and passing imposing mountain scenery all the way: CO 145 north from Cortez to Telluride, CO 62 east to Ridgway then US 550 south through Ouray, Silverton and Durango, with the loop completed by US 60 back to Cortez, past the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. The loop, known as the San Juan Skyway, can be driven in half a day but it is well worth spending at least one night en route, either in one of the small towns or camping free in the surrounding national forest. Dolores, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Durango are all towns that you will pass through on this ride.
Google: Scenic Drive in the San Juan Mountains. It will explaine every town along the way.
I took this trip a long time ago in a four wheeler and dreamed of the day that i would have my bike to make the same ride. Havnt done it yet but it is on top of my to ride list.
Also it is near the four corners area which will lead you to Northern Arizona. The Grand Canyon and through to Route 66.
In any case enjoy your trip !

Guys, just another big THANK YOU to one and all, this is all good stuff and very much appreciated, no doubt I will keep you all posted as time moves on, but in the meantime keep the info flowing. Cheers:hii

OK..here's why I think a GPS is the cat's meow: I leave where I'm at on my bike and follow my nose. GPS is in my pocket. Ever been riding down a road and come to an interesting side road,? think about it for a minute and say "better not," I have no idea where it goes. Well forget that, turn down that road and when you get to another road, turn down that one too. Just ride and smile till it's time to head for home. No idea where your at?? Doesn't matter. Pull the GPS out of your pocket, punch a button that says "home" and your route almost immediently flashes before you eyes. In short, I love when the g/f says "lets get lost.":cheers

If you decide to do the Route 66 tour and come across Missouri, make sure you stop by a place called Missouri Hick BBQ. in Cuba,Mo. Great place for smoked/bbq ribs and cold brew( or sweet tea). The owner rides also!!
