So any advice as to how to get both sides the same, in the same position on the tank?

I would measure from front center of the tank to get the same distance and than center from top over the side , maybe use a sewing tape so it contures with the curve of the tank.

I think a tank without decals or badges looks incomplete, but that's my opinion.
But the bike is yours and after painting you can look at it and decide before the clear coat goes on.
