Having been hit by a deer I do not think there is any defense against them.
I was only doing 35mph, it was daylight about 5pm on an August afternoon and never saw the deer that hit us, it just landed on the front wheel.
Going slow and staying alert may help but if the deer has mind to cross the road and your there, good luck.

I lived in Minnesota and rode a lot of miles seen alot of Deer, glad I never hit one, never had deer whistles on any of my bikes:rofl

I too heard they are a waste of $. Slow down,get load pipes and brighter lights.
