In a bind in Sturgis one year we used some pantyhose and rubber binders round the carb worked pretty good
If you must ride, you can also wrap the pantyhose around the old filter and then reinstall the filter.

i finally got the filter. i just left the bike parked, until i did. it was rough, but not as rough as trying to recover from a bunch of internal damage. the second i got the new filter on the bike, i totally neglected EVERYTHING i was supposed to be doing and put about 90 miles on it
