Will the balanced motor last longer than the unbalanced?

Normally you can expect about 50% life compared to a unblanced engine. This is worth it because you gain 50% in life in your hands due to the lack of "hand shake sydrome". :s

Is there data on this 50% rule? I would like to understand why this is. I mean about my hands, you have me scared now. Are my feet in danger?
Kidding aside, car engines I assume are balanced in the same way one would balance a VT. I don't see how it would fail any sooner. On the other hand diesel engines are disigned to withstand the vibration and I only hope my bike lasts as long as that. I have yet to hear a Goldwing with Screaming Eagle pipes, so why would anyone do that to a Harley.
Unless you build up to a race engine, then I say you may want to balance it.
