Velocity Stacks- good or bad?

Really like the looks of Roland Sands Nostalgic Velocity Stack http://www.rolandsands.com/HTML/Intake-VelocityStack.html. But, are they a good idea for normal riding? I live in the Northeast and ride to work 70 miles a day. There's not alot of technical detail about stacks for me to read about.
Any thought on this would be appreciated...

In theory , the work well to straighten out the air going into the intake but the draw back is usually poor filtering of the air which will lead to faster engine wear eventually over time.

IMO, not worth sacrificing engine life for looks.
