Thanks...so it is basically just an emissions control system, putting more stuff to go wrong and not a performance improvement from my understanding of those videos.

If they do VVT on the engines it could bring a better responding torque range.
It's been on cars and trucks for a long time now. And is reliable, as long as the oil stays clean and full.
The VVT operation is very dependent on oil pressure and flow volume along with position sensors.
Low on oil, performance will be affected, codes will be set, misfires happen.
But the dealer knows how to explain it as. " They all do that "
