What are the expected symptoms of an exhaust leak at the head, or a crack in the 'Y'-pipe for the rear cylinder of a touring model?

Thanks,
Rich P

If you are talking about a blown head gasket, you may not have any power and can feel the compression blowing out from between the head and the jug on that cylinder.

If you mean the exhaust pipe leaking at the head, then the guys have you covered above. Find something to cover the end of the pipes and see if you can pin down or even feel where the leak is.

TQ

Double up some cardboard and stop up the exhaust with gloves on, if its leaking at the pipe you should here it and as T Q said if its a blown head gasket you should have a dead miss or that cylinder would be cooler to the touch and possibly be pumping some oil out also, good Luck and let us know what u find, Capital Jack

Symptoms: ragged exhaust note, unstable idle, low rpm surging, lots of decel popping and popping between shifts, low speed stuttering when warmed up in heavy traffic...

Fix: Tightened rear pipe to head. Purrs like a kitten now. I was going to replace the ragged sounding Hookers with Monster Ovals. Now, ragged sound replaced with deep, throaty note. Popping changed to fairly infrequent, replaced by healthy sounding burble.

Enjoy,
Rich P

Good call Rich...the voice of experience rings clear...sounds like you found the problem! :D
