Yikes...I went to Sturgis in 2006 with some friends. I decided then that the best way to experience it would be go out 2 weeks early, do all the rides, and then as you are leaving drive through Sturgis on your way back home. Just enough to feel the experience and then get out of Dodge.

We have gone during Sturgis and also the 2 weeks before opening day, very different at Atmosphere.
If your good with thousands of bike in front of you and coming at you than during Sturgis week is when you should go, if you like to pull over and take in the beauty of the surroundings you should go a different week.

I have been there during the rally, and I have been there after the rally. I think it all depends on why you are going, party or riding.

I personally don't like a lot of congestion.

Never had a desire to go. My brother and I make a trip to Littleton CO every other year; last trip was three years ago; haven't made the trip since Mom passed. Usually around Sturgis and we see all the bike traffic headed south so long trips are OK; Sturgis is nor far up the road but we do Sturgis on YouTube, that is as close as we want to get.
