Stripping coating from aluminum

Be very careful what you use on aluminum to strip it. Acid can cause hydrogen embrittlement and weaken the aluminum. I learned that in the Navy with Hamilton Standard aluminum propeller blades. Although in the civilian world it doesn't seem to be worried about. What do they use on the aluminum frame rails and tanks of tractor-trailer rigs to "brighten" the aluminum at a truck wash? You got it... ACID. :(
