Starter question

Why would a 97 Dyna require a pre 89 Hitachi-type starter! I bought this bike used so I dont know it's history other than it has an S&S engine installed. The frame and title say it's a 1997.

I have seen this. Newer engines with older primary types and starters. Maybe it was bought as a package. My brother had an older FL with a new S & S motor and it used earlier 87 type primary. You can change it to newer primary so it can use different starter.
