My 2003 FXD recently began failing to stay connected when starting. When the starter button was pushed, the starter assy would engage for a short time - then quit, with a loud 'crannkk' noise. I thought it might be the solenoid clutch, for the normal failure mode of the jackshaft is a total disconnect. I replaced the clutch with a Harley kit and cleaned the solenoid surfaces, the starter motor was healthy and turning. It continues to do the same thing. Could it be the jackshaft - grabbing, but only partially? Has anyone dealt with this before? Thanks in advance for any input you may have.
Sounds like the starter drive itself rather than the jack shaft as you said. It's like a one way clutch that when it goes or gets weak will not keep the starter gear engaged with the ring gear on the clutch basket. http://www.hdtimeline.com/harley_da...ues/1683-starter_spins_no_start.html#post8531
Glider, thanks for the input. I have ordered a new starter, should be here by Wednesday. I will let you know what happens. Tony
