When changing the fluid on the transmission/chain case on a Sportster, it's challenging to get the quad ring to stay in place when replacing the cover. Simply put some grease (I used some bicycle grease; others have used petroleum jelly, anything will likely work) in the groove where the quad ring sits and it will hang right in there when you are replacing the cover.
