Checked the starter and it is not loose but thanks anyway

Go get a stethascope and se if it sounds louder on the primary by the clutch also see if it can be heard in the trans, Possably it could be the inner primary bearing starting to go bad. Mine made a knocking type noise before it turned to a growl.When I listened it sounded just a little louder on the inner primary cover then the trans bythe input shaft. The problem is that the inner primary bearing is only a couple inches away from the trans input bearing.
