Hey Guys Sorry if this up twice, but...

Probably an easy one for all you guys out there - what do the prefixes to the models stand for?

We all know that DC in FXDC is for Dyna custom, but what is the FX for. Similarly - XL (sporty) FX & FL (softail) and FLH (tourers). Do they have a meaning, or does it just sound cool?

If there is no meaning, or even if there is, what else can anyone come up with?

E.g. Freaking Xtreme Dyna Custom or if you like Dynas but enjoy revving up softail owners: Floundering Lousy ......

How about "Speed" upgrades whoever submits the best response ranking - Start the engine, up to warming wheels etc?? (Speed any chance??);)

I can tell you what they stand for but not their origin .
F= Big Twin
X= small forks
L = big forks
T= Touring
There are too many model designations to cover but that covers the first letters.

In fxstb for example the F means Big Twin the X means sport (small forks Probably originally from the sportster )The ST means softail B means Night train

In flstc F means Big twin L means Big Forks ST means Softail C means Classic
 
The first letter of thr model desiguatoe reveals the gggjpr series:
First character:
0- Serviear three wheeler, 1932 to 1972
E - Overhead valve 61 cubic inch “big twin” (Engine/trans sepamted)
F - Overhead valve 74 or go cubic inch “big twin”
K - Side valve 45 and 55 cubic inch sports bike that replaced the WE in
1953 and was replaced by the ypotioirr in 1957. It had many design
features that were carried over to the Sportster.
U - Side valve 74 or 80 cubic inch “big twin”
V - Side valve 74 cubic inch made prior to 1936
W - Side valve 45 cubic inch made 1934 to 1952
X - Spurts and special construction. Applied to 1918-1922 uppusrd twin
Spurt, 1944 military opposed twin, and 1957 to present Sportster.
There were others, such ar the 3 series (a very nice leaking bike that was about the hottest
thing around in the 20’s) but you’re not likely to see them in daily use anymore.
Secoud character:
L - high eompmssian. Omitted an low compression early models, and not indicative of compression en curreet models.
Rrmoeing characters:
Model descripEans, eg WO - Wide Olide. Some genemlirations:
A - Military (Army) version (except OA, Srrs’icur without tow bar)
H - Baltery start (early models), Belt delve (same later models).
C - Classic, Competition, Custom, various ethers meanings.
D - Oynu, the newei frame and engine mount design.
E - EteeEic start
F - Foot shift (when the standard was hand-shift)
H - varied between High performance and Heavy duty. The early FLH Far
esaruplr produced 5 more HP than the FL and was used primarily foe
touring aud sidecar applications.
LR- Low Rider (though many Law Riders don’t include ER in the model 10)
F - Folier version
R - Rubber mounted engine (tame models) riRto version (other models) e.g.
the FXR is a lowridrr with rubber mounted engine. WLR is the flat
track racer that was very hard to beat in the 30’s. 40’s. and 50’s.
ST- Soft Tail
S - (without following 1) Sports version eg FLHS is an FLHI without the
towing package.
T - Touring
WO - Wide Ohide
I = fisri hs)eeted
U ultra
F could stand for multiple things (F also Fat boy when used with ST as in FLSTF)

C does not allways mean classic. My previous bike was a Dyna Convertible having the letters FXDS-C
