Interstate or Country road rides???

I started the thread " have pets" and I must say I'm glad to see that there are quite a few animal lovers out there.In saying that, I am working on a fund raiser for the local animal shelter here where I live. I have a band and DJ that are willing to play at no charge. The Bike Night spot is also giving up the place for this event.This is planned hopefully in March 09. I am trying to come up with a nice ride that will draw a lot of bikes(goal of at least 500) with a entry of $20 per bike. I prefer interstate myself where you aren't doing the 30 mph drives when there are quite a lot of bikes. I am aware of the pro's and cons of both. I have an idea of the route which doesn't include country roads. What would you prefer.....country or interstate?

I probably won't make it down in March (but who knows) I would vote for county roads. usually makes a more relaxed trip and for a 20 to 30 mile ride you get a bit of time doing it on back roads. 20 miles on an interstate is just enough to warm up the oil.

I prefer Country roads have a lot of curves but hopefully not to many that require you to slow down below 20 t0 25 mph with several long stretches of strait road to allow you to open it up a little. Interstates are good if you are in a hurry to get to a distination or to a meeting pllace before a ride but they are not very relaxing unless it's early in the morning before they start getting to crowded, One point is I'd rather take a chance on getting hit by someone going 40 to 50 than someone that is doing 80 or 90. I know that's not something we like to think about but it is always lurking around in my mind when I'm rideing.

Guess I should have said the route I was thinking about was roughly a 2 hour ride with a break midway ,,most on the interstate.

I love riding in the mountains and along the coast the best. Give me a "country" ride over the interstate, but please... a little change in scenery regardless of the pavement below you is nice....

unless i've gone so long I'm almost out of gas. Then I just was the road under me to led me to station ASAP!

Interstates are simply for getting somewhere quickly. Back roads are much better for actually seeing some scenery and making the event more memorable. I'll strongly second the idea of carefully planning the route to avoid a lot of left turns and traffic lights where the group can get split up. I highly recommend getting police escorts if you can. Do a good pre-ride briefing and obey all the laws and speed limits and it should be a blast!

Good at you for taking on this deal. For me, country roads are much more enjoyable. You've gotten lots of good suggestions in the previous posts. Hope you get a ton of riders and great wx.

I would much rather travel on country roads.Thats not to say that getting the scoot up to sixth isn't relaxing but for a group I would rather be on a country road. Like Hobbit stated I would go and plot out the trip in advance and keep in mind that all do not ride the same.Keep rest stops(gas,restrooms,etc)in mind.

Country roads! Remember if you decide on intersates, some riders seem to fall behind everyone else, so you may lose a few.
