4v AC is a great number. But Variable reluctors don't actually have a Ground. They have polarity but usually no physical frame ground. That is done in order to give the designers more options in the way they can use the pickup. As you can see in the schematic, pin 11 & 28 of the ECM go to the crank sensor and the Body of the crank sensor is isolated from frame ground. (or does not need to be tied to frame ground.)

I can't say why the bike started working. But it was not because the pickup was not grounded to the frame.

BTW.. What sensor were your trying to test as "stand-alone". The cam sensor is Hall effect and requires a +5 power supply. The crank sensor does not.
It is easy to test a hall effect switch. The crank sensor can be tricky and for what they cost is not worth the trouble.
