Ignition timing cover rivets

OK, I have searched and I cannot find the answer yet...

I want to replace the standard cover which requires drilling out the rivets. The workshop manual says to replace with HD rivets which prevent any bits dropping into the casing.

My questions (assuming these rivets are easily purchased from HD) - Do you use a standard pop-rivet gun to install them?

I would hate to get to that point and find I need a special tool....

Use a regular pop rivet gun to install the HD rivets. The difference in the HD rivets is that the end piece inside the cavity does not have the usual button that breaks off when the rivet is set like regular rivets do which could cause a problem with the electronics in the older bikes that were in the cam chest.
Most times using a replacement cover, there are threaded bosses in the cam chest that will accept a threaded bolt instead of the rivets. Remove the stock cover first and look to see if you have them on yours. You then can install the replacement with allen bolts instead of rivets.
