If no change means no brake light,then the brake switch is bad.You can try to clean it with contact cleaner or replace the control module.Some guys upgrade to the lighted controls.

Glad that it worked out. Had something similar with a 1100 Honda Shadow but with the kickstand switch. The bike wouldn't run with the kickstand down - as designed - but when raised and the switch was stuck, it wouldn's start.
