Group Riding -- still undecided

All of you offered great information about what to expect in participating in a group ride.

I still haven't decided if I like riding in such large groups! I went on a 250+ mile endurance ride .....a part of 175 bikes on the road. But it was also dangerous.

Leaving planned stops was like being in a motorcycle rodeo with everyone wanting to leave at the same time from different areas of the parking lot (or gas station). There were also guys blowing thru stop signs to keep the pack going and together. I don't think riders should be blowing thru intersections just because they are on a group ride.

I just couldn't imagine what a total mess that was......

Don't get me wrong, I ride with a club, and we do lots of group rides.... but we have rules, and folks actually follow them. 175 bikes on a 250 mile ride??? forgive me... but I'll pass.

It's one thing to do a well organized, police escorted event, and another to have everyone pile out of the rest stops, like the sprint starts at Le Mans.

I'm glad you had fun.... guess I'm just too old....

eddited to add.... maybe I ain't THAT old... a 250 mile ride ain't no "endurance" ride... barely counts as more than a short ride to me

Wow, 250 miles with that many bikes, yikes!

Yep, I'd stay away from that myself... even if I was 16 years old.

Naw, at 16 I probably would have joined in. Back then, no helmet, no eye protection, shorts and a T-shirt, smoking a ciggie. If I crashed back then, do a little kicking here and there to straighten up the bent parts, give it a kick start and if it started, crank it open until you catch up. Rules, we didn't need no stinkin' rules. Now, those were the days.

I was on a charity poker run once when a goober on a Harley was literally taunting a guy in a cage...yes this can happen. IMHO this Harley rider was just asking to be ran over. The guy must have surely been drinking to have conducted himself in such a ignorant manner. In some of these big riding events you run into all kinds, that is for sure.

175 bikes in one group is a bit much IMO.

Better would be 3 groups of 50, with 5-10 min spaces between them.

And yes, gas stops need to be highly organized, or else they can get messy very quickly.

I enjoy group riding. However it can be dangerous if you have people that is not use to it and/or doesn't pay attention to what they are doing. The largest group ride I have been on had around 500 bikes and it was around a 40 mile trip. This was a very organized ride with police escorts front and rear.

I'll side with Hobbit on this one. been on more than a few group rides with people more experienced than me , mostly. I'm comfortable side by side, staggered with guys I ride with a lot. I ride tail gunner mostly for those reasons but it is fun to lag behind and then crack it a bit to catch up.
