Fuel low light coming on too soon

They all do what. Have an inaccuracy of 20%. Think about it, based on percent of error, there really is not a reason why they should be that far off. Yes they may all do it but for me that should not make it acceptable. I can't think of too many places where anyone accepts 80% accuracy as ok and acceptable. From my experience the metric manufactures seem to get down to the drop so it can be done.

I will know more after I tear into mine this week. There may be more to the story than I realize.

Yep, some times around 1/4 tank mine comes on, after I park it and fire it back up light goes out

TQ nice chart. If i understand it correctly, Blue is MPG made up of city & highway, with each dot being a fillup. Would you happen to know if your tank is quoted in manual as being 6 gallon.?

The Owner's Manual calls it a 5 gallon tank. So that is a nominal amount. I have not had the tank modified in any way, so it is what it has always been (whoa, that sounds sorta Zen!).

TQ

That makes it even crazier because you have pumped 5.4 gallons into what is called a 5 gallon tank.
I am curious to see what mine actually measures out to be from bone empty to complete fill.

Jack, my problem is I hate stopping for gas. I would love it if my cage had a 1000 gallon gas tank and I could buy gas once a year. On the bike I feel like I am always stopping for gas or needing to stop for gas and when I do it only takes 3 1/2 gallons.

That does not sound right. Maybe the pump was out of calibration. I have ran my bike totally out of gas before (more then once). Past the the stalling at stop sign stage. And it took no more then 5.1 gallons, filled to the baffle.

Largest refill volume is 5.427 gal on 9/23/09.
TQ
Do you remember if that fill up was a "stall at the stop" fill up?

I googled this:

"harley 5 gallon tank how much does it hold"

From reading the search results. I would guess the tank holds 5.2 to 5.4 Gallons.

I believe it was, although I do not record that on my spreadsheet. My five largest volumes were:

No. Date Odometer Trip Gallons MPG Cost $/mile
182 09/23/09 75,494 182.1 5.427 33.55 14.00 0.077
186 11/17/09 76,179 173.2 5.414 31.99 15.15 0.087
181 09/15/09 75,312 172.8 5.406 31.96 14.05 0.081
177 06/15/09 74,609 175.2 5.399 32.45 14.90 0.085
178 06/25/09 74,783 173.1 5.372 32.22 15.25 0.088

Same here Hoop, some times I ride hard and the light comes on with 1 gallon left like it should, I pay attention to the miles now instead, tired of fighting with the Stealer LOL

Wow you run it to the limit. With those numbers you would have to believe the tank holds over 5.4 Gallons.

TQ, just looking at your average MPG I would bet your engine is 1 Happy Camper. No 02 sensor feedback (14.3-14.7) on that year bike and I would guess a nice fat mid 13 A/F for cruise..
I bet it feels right. :p

It does feel good. I had the Stage 1 download done by HD way back before I knew better. So when I did my cams and installed the TFI, I initially set the TFI as recommended. This is the mpg hit around fill #165-171. Then I turned the TFI "off" to see what happened. I have concluded that the Stage 1 download was sufficiently "richer" than the original set-up that it is still OK with the cams. Still have the TFI installed, but pots are set so the unit is virtually off.

TQ

Wait 'til you get to my age.... stops aren't dictated by need for gas, rather by need to pee.
