If you do go up California Rt 1, there's a cool restaurant about 60 miles south of San Francisco called 'The Phoenix'. It had burned down, and was rebuilt. Thus the name. I'm not sure just where it is but it sits right on the cliff overlooking the ocean. Fantastic view!
We were there in October 2000 around 5 pm. The side facing the ocean is all windows. We watched the fog come in off the ocean and roll right up the cliff.
It completely engulfed the restaurant so that the only thing you could see was fog. By the time we left it had dissipated.

Definitely stop at the Hearst Castle. It's history is amazing. To think that it was mostly done by horse/mule wagons bringing everything up from ships.
