1999 (actual production in Sept. '98 for '99 model year).

That last question will start a row! Leave it at the fact that there are pros and cons to both model engines. I happen to have both now, and like them each for different reasons. For what it is worth, here is some info from Wikipedia:

For the softails the last year of the evo was 99.
The moco had to do something with all of those evo motors.
