East Tennessee

Thanks for the advice.
I think we'll definitely do Gatlinburg to Cherokee and then probably return by the same route. I'm still working on SWMBO to agree to come back along the Cherohala Skyway but she's not sure about the distance.
I'll see how I get on.
Once again, thanks for the replies.

If you want, keep me updated when you are comming and I will try to find some uptodate info for you before you arrive. We have a little black book about the ridding in the southeastern USA. If you want e-mail your address and I will send one. Lots of ridding routes and phone numbers of helpfull Harley ridders to help with trouble.

The end of May is Memorial weekend and Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg will be packed but the weather should be fine. The HD shop in Gatlinburg has only clothes and accessories, you will need to go to Pigeon Forge HD, at stoplight #3, if I remember correctly at the intersection of 441 and 321. The folks there are super. It's closer than Marysville.
I would get your request for a rental in early because that time is very popular so no telling how many bikes they will have as a rental fleet.
TrickyDoc has you covered for the ride, take 441 south over to Cherokee, you can go to Cherohala Skyway, Clingman's Dome, and the Dragon if you desire ( I would steer clear of the Dragon, too crowded then). Make sure you have warm clothes when you go over the top, the air temp changes fast with elevation.
We are headed up in late March for a week and plan to rent as well, so if I remember I'll give you a shout to let you know how it went...luck

Here's a link to a few roads in the area. Auto Tours The Cade's Cove route is good for history buffs but is very slow and the surface was not that good last time we were there. The others are all good, the Dragon is good for bragging rights when you get home and it can be done safely, just wave the squids on their sport bikes around.

One suggestion, if you haven't already made lodging plans, skip the hotels and rent a cabin. There are many rental agencies, Patriot is the one we use, and they are running a lot of discounts this year. For about the price of a hotel room you can get a nice cabin up on a hill with hot tub, king bed and room to stretch out.

Hope you have a great trip.

Thanks for all the advice, we can't wait to get on the road,

Jonas: I've driven a few thousand miles across the USA in the last ten years, but the last time I rode a bike over there was about 5 years ago. That was around Austin, Texas. I think this will be a lot different!

Trickydoc: We will be in Pigeon Forge on the 27th & 28th May. Being mid-week we hope it'll be bit less crowded than Memorial weekend. Any update on the roads would appreciated. Re your little black book, if you PM me, I'll send you my email address.

Gator508: Good advice about the warm clothes, I hadn't considered the altitude. I was too busy looking at the twisty roads on the map. Hope you have a good trip in March

All this friendly advice and good experience is what makes this the best Harley forum!!!!

Thanks again everybody.

I ride the area a few times every year and when I say there are no bad roads I'm serious. I avoid Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, way too much traffic and over commercialised for my taste. As others have said , try and get up to the Cherohalla Skyway it's worth the trip. No problem finding food or gas and the views are terrific any route you take.
Hope you enjoy your visit with us.
