Broken Studs

We all will encounter a broken stud if we work on these bikes sooner or later but when they break below the surface, this is when you need the left handed drill bit to remove the broken stud that breaks below the surface.

These bits run opposite direction of the standard bits and will generally remove the broken piece from the heat that is generated while drilling.
It's not uncommon to start drilling and have the broken stud come out on the drill bit.

If you have a stud that breaks above the surface, you can double nut it and usually get it out.

As a toolmaker this is a slick way to get that broken stud/bolt out. I would suggest that if you can get a center punch on the end of the broken part it would held keep the drill bit from walking. As with all operations of this type slow and steady is the rule. Thanks again Mr. Data
