I agree with Jack and HDDON, it sounds like you need to rebuild the carb. That will give you a positive point to work from, if the problem still exists. Follow the instructions and good luck. Don't forget to let us know how this works out.
Just an update...I did a rebuild. It's exactly the same. I believe it has to do with spark. I don't have a compression tester. Maybe I'll try new plugs and coils?

I suggested the compression test because my '82 fx had the same symptons you describe. Did the same as you thinking fuel or spark, it had a blown rear head gasket.
You can get a compression tester at one of the auto supply stores, not real expensive.
