1980 FLH 1200 stutter

That is a very good point, check the roll pin on the back of the mechanism, seems to me I remember them wearing and shearing, this could lead to a no start
Not sure if it is the correct term but I called those things fly weights and I got pretty good at mixing and matching parts. One of the common issues was an oblong hole for the roll pin. The second issue was weak springs. I mean they are not expensive so a new one is the way to go but you can tap out the roll pins and if you have bought enough of them you will have pins and springs for emergency road repairs. Lastly this was the first part I used anti-sieze on but just a light coat you don't want that to find it's way to the points.

Thanks for all the info!
Everything checked out and it turned out to be an adjustment screw on the carb.
Now to find the "sweet spot"!

You guys rock!

I'd be inclined to agree it is in the fuel system.

Sea Foam to help move the old varnish out...:s

The idle jet might be a little dirty and the sea foam will help.

Unless it is running poorly at open throttle positions it not the main jet IMO.

Thanks!
I agree, it's not the main jet, it was the low air idle screw.
Sea Foam sounds like a good idea as well.
Can't ever be too clean.
