Stator covered in Oil?

I was on a trip when my lights begin dimming then the bike started to backfire then everything shut off. So after getting it home i removed the Stator and it was completely black. My question is are the Stators suppose to submerged in oil or do i have a leak somewhere?

Did you recently change the primary oil?.Maybe did you overfill then.
Normally the stator may be a little greasy, but not totally covered in oil.
So check the primary-oil level first!. Just beneath the clutchbasket should be Ok. Gr.

The stator lives in an oil mist environment. When the voltage regulator malfunctions, it gets real hot in there and cooks the oil.
