Transmission Sticking

The gear shift on my low mileage 2006 Fat Boy started sticking between 2nd and third. Initially it wouldn't move to 3rd at all but subsequently did. Now it sticks and releases after some fiddling. When changing down it also feels 'soft' as if it missed a gear.

Check out the shift shaft where it's mounted to the frame. Quite often from washing the bike the lubrication will get washed away and the shift will feel as if it is sticking. If you unbolt the shift linkage, you can feel if the shift shaft is hanging up and needs lubrication. It should be loose and flopping around with the linkage off it, if not then disassemble and grease it.

the bush can also require reaming as lube wont always fix the problem.
