Starter problem

Disconnect the battery and pull the starter off so you can see the teeth on the ring gear. If there are no broken teeth put a new starter in.

Before you pull the starter remove the outer primary cover and take a look at the pinion gear assembly to make sure that the screw that holds it in place has not worked loose.

If you are talking about the '71XL in your avatar then take the primary off and check your starter drive(Bendix) on the end of your jack shaft. It is a round part with a gear on the end off it and a pulley right behind it. Disconnect your Neg. battery cable then see if you can turn that gear in both directions. If you can it is Bad, it should only turn one direction.
