Southern Lake Superior, Lake Michigan & Lake Huron -what a ride

Just got back from a week riding around the southern part of Lake Superior in Michigan. The water and the sky were crystal blue and the temps were in the 70's with no humidity. Add absolutely smooth surfaced PERFECT roads ( not one pot hole the whole week) and this was the best riding we ever had. We went to Copper Harbor and up Brockway Mountain, then down to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park over to Baraga, down to US 2 and across the Mighty Mackinaw Bridge to Petoskey, Indian River, Cheboygan and St Ignace. If you ever want a spectacular ride with awsome views around every corner, twisties, fresh pine air, great roads, a place to meet other bikers, give Michigan and it's Upper Peninsula a try. It's got everything and then some.

The UPPER PENINSULA isnt a part of Michigan........ at least they would love to disown the Lower part. They really, really take care of the roads up there, and there isnt as much traffic. We rode 50 miles on brand new asphalt so smooth it was like glass, and never passed another vehicle the entire way. Maybe it's because it gets so cold up there that they use a different grade of cement or thicker asphalt..... all I know is, it was the best week we ever spent riding.
I live in the lower part and know what a mess most of the roads are......but when you get north of theHoughton Lake area, (in the Lower Peninsula)...from there up, across the Mackinaw Bridge and all the roads North, South, East and West were absoluetly fantastic.

Its nice someone has good roads .. 75 was ground and is terrible right now north of saginaw to about exit 190
 
I 75 will get better once you get up around West Branch..... smooth sailing from there up. I'm near Midland so I know of what you speak....... Saginaw South and anywhere near Detroit is a disaster.
 
i only got to exit 202 and it does get better near there switching lanes this weekend felt like haiving a flat and the bumps jezz
 
I hear ya....... It's a shame when we pay some of the highest gasoline taxes here in Michigan, we have the State Lottery plus the extra revenues from the Casino's, yet they let the roads go to heck. We use to have roads everyone raved about......now they rant and rave.
 
I went around the coast of MI last summer. Started half way up the west side and and came down the east side. Did make it across the Bridge. ( good reason to go back!) I thought most of the roads were great. But I live in PA were the traffic cone is a way of life! That ride was great by the way.

I've got both sides of my family living in Western PA..... around the Pittsburgh/Washington area....so I know those roads well. How you go up, down and park on some of those "hills" are beyond me. Anyway, The Upper Peninsula roads are so far superior to those of lower Michigan it's like the difference between Republicans and Democrats. We also have two seasons in Michigan......Winter and Orange Cones.
We LOVED the week we spent up there, and I'm proud as heck that I rode both ways across that bridge.. I'm a newbee rider having only 700 total miles under my belt before we went on this trip......so to cross the bridge ( and on the grate part one way due to construction) was a real triumph and confidence boost for me. My Husband wantd to go across so bad, and wanted me to go too. I wasn't going to go, but said to myself suck it up and.....just "do it".
You've got a beautiful state to ride in Bud....especially in the summer and fall. Someday we plan on riding out your way when we make the trip to Maine. It's got to be fantistic riding along the Atlantic coast.
All the Best and come back to Michigan and do the TIP OF THE MIT..It's beautiful to ride along Lakes Michigan and Lake Huron, and along the Leelanaw Peninsula by Traverse City.

Yes people it is a beautiful up here in the UP (I live close to the big lake) and there are some good roads to ride. BUT be very careful of the deer. They usually aren't alone and are worst durning the evening hours. Be espically careful driving into the sun with the woods coming up to the road.
