Sounds, noises, cam chain tensioners, primary oil ... what a mess!

After changing the voltage regulator and stator in my 2007 FLSTC, with some labor on the primary, a new sound becomes worrying me: just when deccel, at some low rpm (but NOT at idle), a metallic, rumbling, "uuuu" like noise begins to appear. Yes, it began after s service in the primary. Could my bike have a primary chain problem? Tensioners? Isn't it supposed to be HYD in my 2007 bike? How can I test if that sound comes from the primary of from another part?

Thanks in advance,:small3d012:

1 thing its easy to tell if u have auto tensioner no access hole to adj. u mite want to pull primary cover off & check in there. i also use a mech stethoscope..

My guess is after just having the chain off for stator repl. it's out of adjustment and making noise. Look in the self help tips for the easy way to adjust it.

Thanks all. I'm trying different methods, beginning with simple methods described in self help tips. Let's see if I am able to avoid opening (again) the primary.

I don't like the way you described the new sound. Who replaced the stator. If you did it yourself, did you use new Torx screws to fasten it and did you torque them to the proper amount. Did you happen to install an SE comp at the same time. Did you get the comp nut up to the proper torque using a locking bar.

I would not push my luck. If the chain tensioner procedure does not eliminate the noise, I would immediately pull off the primary cover to see what is going on. You may want to drop the oil and inspect the drain plug magnet for metal first. I hope the magnets are not hitting your new stator

Now I am really scared. Well, the sound is NOT a constant one, I mean, I feel it sometimes, not always, so I haven't tried yet the simple adjustment method Glider suggests. But I will try before doing anything.
But Hoople has scared me so much: no, I didn't changed the stator myself, my trusted mechanic did it. Well, he is not a HD specialist, but he usually works so cute. Hope this time is not be the exception. Now, I will DEFINITELY try the glider's tip. For sure.
Thanks, guys, I feel this forum is really helpful

I am not trying to scare you but lets face it. Unless the stars and the planets are in perfect alignment what are the chances that a new totally UNRELATED problem just appeared at the same time you buttoned up the cover on the stator change. Yes, of course it can happen but odds say it is related to the work that was recently done.

Now of that recent work that was done, how many things would cause a "Metallic" noise.
Metallic is the word you used. The word metallic means metal on metal to me. Metal on metal to me is Not a good sound. Thumping, clanking, knocking is better than Metallic. Comp nut loose? excessive chain slap? broken spring in comp? Chain tensioner ratchet not working? Anyone of them does need attention now.

For the price of a gasket and a qt of formula+, I would sleep a lot better knowing what it was.

Scared, no just back track it like Hoople said, peace of mind and a quart of lube and gasket and you will know for sure:s

Well, guys, thanks everybody for your advises. The sound went out after trying the easy "auto-adjust" tensioner maneuvers. After 1k miles last week, the bike went smooth. Just a pity the hot firm the rear cylinder. In some beaches, I was thinking in bathing the bike :)
