hey guys, i hope this question hasnt been beaten to death, but whats up with the rear caliper?? (05 xl883c). Took the back tire off for a little maintenance, including the caliper. Now the caliper moves a little and the pads barely touch the disc. This is my first time working on a harley, but ive been working on cars for a long time. Ive restored muscle cars, but this one caliper is gonna be the death of me i swear. Ive read that you have to replace the whole caliper if you remove the slide pin???!!! I need verification before i just rake out that kinda dough. Please guys, need your help. New paint, new wheels, need to ride!! thanks ya'll.

on a side note: can someone give me a real way to bleed these brakes, i just cant seem to master the conventional foot pump the pedal method on this thing.

Sounds to me like something is out of place I'm not buying you can't remove the caliper w/o replaceing it. You might try shrt quick strokes of the pedal as compared to the standard pump 3 or 4 times and hold it.

Brakes, Tires and Wheels - Harley Davidson Community You may want to buy a model specific manual

hey guys thanks for the replies. Hogrotten ill give that a shot thanks.

lordharold- I checked multiple times to make sure the pads were completely seated, i actually took them out of the retainers and re-seated them about 3 times.

hoople- no i didnt replace the bearings, but i needed to regrease the rear axle and re tension the belt. Im pretty sure i did that right. I measured from the front swingarm pivot bolt to the rear axle and made sure the distances were the same while allowing a good tension on the belt. Maybe this threw something off?

Jack klarich- i know I need to buy one and definately want to, but i just got laid off and cant really spare 60-80 bucks on a manual for something so stupid (to me) before checking on here for a solution. My last chevelle restoration was completed from 80% my experience and knowledge, and 20% on the forums over at chevelle-tech. Forums are a time, life, and money saver if others are willing to share their experiences. :bigsmiley12:

10/4 on the bearings. Your good. There is a sequence and order in changing the bearings, otherwise the brake rotor will be offset by about .070". That is why I asked.

ok. well good to know in the future hoople. harleys seem to be very difficult for your "average person" to work on. i guess ill just have to look everything over again and take it back apart

When u say you removed the caliper, did you unbolt the halves? There are o rings that seal the halves so they do not leak, Just trying to understand your step by step here? As far as the pins, as long as they are not scored or bent you can lube them and reinstall them

All good advise above. When you removed the wheel and caliper the pistons were pushed back into the caliper bore. When you reassemble the wheel and caliper you will need to press the rear brake peddle untill the pads contact the disc. This may take several presses of the peddle. If you did not remove the break line or take the pads out this should get you back in wind.
