Primary Chain Alignment

I'm want to adjust the primary chain by way of the spacer behind the compensator. I place tension on the chain and pushed it back toward the case.
Do I measure the distance from a chain plate to the gasket surface at the top of the chain, or the bottom?

I know it shouldn't make a difference, but, the compensator measures the same top and bottom and the measurement at the clutch differs about .050" from top of the chain to the bottom.

I don't which two to compare or if something is wrong with the clutch basket.

???

It appears to be not running true. When I measure the compensator side, the top of the chain measurement and the bottom of the chain measurement are .003" off from each other. That is OK. On the clutch side, there is a .050" difference between the top side and the bottom side of the chain. (This is measuring from a chain plate to the gasket surface of the casing). This makes it very difficult to determine what thickness compensator washer to put in the bring the diffeence between the clutch and compensator to within .030" of each other.
