Oil temp gauge question

I am installing an oil temp gauge in place of air gauge(useless) on a 2000 flhtpi. My question is, do I have to use a sender that goes with the gauge or can I use just any sender. I purchased the gauge on ebay used, didn't come with a sender unit. It is a Rodger McEwen, will a stock Harley sender unit work with this or do I have to get one from that mfg? Any help would be much appreciated.
