oil leaks, do they ever end?

Chase'em, your 1984 Sporty should be oil tight...maybe new gaskets, o-rings and such are needed. Clean the bike REAL good and chase after a short ride in town, not too much speed to allow oil to spread everywhere, you will probably find something like drain plug gasket, cracked o-ring, derby cover gasket or fasteners put on without sealer and the like causing the leaking. Some say that putting the primary cover gasket dry is best, using guide pins/fasteners to ensure alignment and tighten progressively in proper crisscross sequence 3 or more levels prior to final torque.

With a bike of that age i would suspect that most of the gaskets and o rings are near the end of their lives
Having been involved with motorcycles for a long time i have found when dealing with one over 20 years old that it is sometimes better to just do an engine rebuild over winter and replace all the oil seals and gaskets rather than trying to change them as they go

You may try some dye to locate the exact leak, and as fin says with an older bike the gaskets and o rings will distort from age and heat cycles
