Niagara - Places to see and not see

Ok, just booked my wife and I's 10 year anniversary (man that went fast) get away up in Niagara, we are staying on the Canadian side at the Sterling Inn and right now really looking forward to it, since August and September are going to be crazy, filled with 2 of our 3 kids birthdays.

Now, I need some advice, dinner is already booked when we arrive, but then Friday and Saturday are for touring for the most part. So could use some advice on places to go and where not to waste any money on.

Thanks in advance for the great advice. Also, I will not have the bike up there, this is a car only trip.

Thanks Steve, I figured you would have some input I looked into the falls view places, but needed something a bit more romantic and the sterling had a great package that included dinner, spa time and accomodations. The wife wanted the spa day most of all.

I always enjoyed having dinner up the skylon tower, 360 degree revolving restaurant.
A bit pricey though, but a good steak and the view at night is worth it.

Clifton hill is always good for a laugh with some scary (EDIT) haunted houses if your into that kinda thing.

I grew up in Rochester, NY, and made a lot of trips there as a kid. Only been there once now that I'm grown up (which is still debatable) and obviously it's a different experience depending on your age.

Maid of the Mist was a blast and would be at the top of my list.

Not positive what it's called but there's also a tour where you descend in an elevator and end up behind the falls. Absolutely unbelieveable the noise and raw power of the water!

If it's still there we spent a couple very relaxing hours at some type of butterfly garden/collection down the road from the falls.

For trip suggestions, if you are into wine tasting, there are plenty of wineries in the area. Take Lakeshore Rd through to Niagara on-the-Lake which is near St. Catharines. Ask some locals for some places to stop in. You'll likely run into other bikers as well. Most should know of some nice places to tour locally and point you in the right direction.

Another suggestion is to head up towards Orangeville to the Belfountain/Credit Valley area.

I know there is good riding all around the Niagara region but, I just haven't ventured to discover it yet. Folks from Toronto head to Hamilton/Niagara Falls a lot for rides. Once you get west of Kitchener, it's just farm land and consession roads. (Or highway) So it's either head around the lake and head north or north east.

Sorry I couldn't offer you specific places or roads. I'll check with a few locals and see if they offer suggestions.

Niagra can be a ripoff if you stay too long. The Maid is great and cheep. On the NY side just accross the bridge is a park, if you enter the park and drive to back leaving all the paying attractions behind. You will find three tiny islands, parking is free. Walk out to the very last island, what you will fing is fantastic, no guard rails, no warning signs, just wet rocks jutting out into the rapids. if you slip and fall in you next stop is over. It is the closest thing to what it might have looked like 300 years ago, and it is free.

Now that I've got my coffee and working on winding down with a frosty mug, I might as well share what my friends suggested.


Old Winery Resturant just outside Niagara on-the-Lake. Good food, reasonable prices.

Also received some suggestions to ride Lakeshore Rd along Lake Erie, then turn towards Dunnville and make your way to Cayuga to the track. They have some super bike racing there most weekends. No HD's but, it still can be something of interest. It's not the destination but, the ride right?

Anyways, have fun, spend your money.


From my own experience with The Falls, everything is expensive locally. Food, gas etc.

There is always the Casino with tax free winnings if your lucky enough to win. You don't have to report it to Uncle Sam.

There's a Pawn Shop/Motorcycle museum in the Falls that I'll call my brother tomorrow for the name of. They have some Evil stuff and other biker stuff, but old age means the name is gone.
