New law being passed

Of interest to NYC bikers and any others that ride into NYC. On Dec. 18 the City Council will be passing a law requiring all bikes to have an EPA tag on there exhaust systems. No need to prove they pass the 80 decibel limit, no tag you have a problem. A MAJOR one,$1000 fine and temporary confiscation until paid. Second offense hikes fine to $2500 and permanent fortfeiture. If the bike is parked and has no tag it can be ticketed by a meter maid.
Sounds kind of severe to me but what can you do about it being a minority group. As with the helmet law 20-30 years ago.
The next question, what is an exhaust system EPA tag? How and where do you get one?
The article was in todays Daily News Dec 11 on page 4. I am going to try and call my city council person tomorrow and see if they have a clue about obtaining an EPA tag.Bet I dont get an answer.

I hope it works that way here (NYC) but I doubt it.

Different type of tag I think as it has to be on the bike when it is parked so as not to get a ticket. If it were removable it would be on someone elses bike mighty quick.

The concept of ticketing parked bikes for non compliance and the confiscation thing are just a bit distrubing. There is an additional issue on the NY ABATE of Long Island regarding safety inspection stations for bikes. Maybe we should just pay $20.00 at the city limits for a day pass to ride through but pay no mind to that cage belching blue smoke with the 500 watt stero vibrating the teeth out everyones head.

Does this apply to all new bikes going forward, or all older bikes as well?

Interesting that EU scrapped the idea because it was impractical, yet good ol' USA politicians have never been afraid of implementing failed and discredited policies out of Euro-Socialism envy.

Mark my words...someone will invent a way to run vehicles on hydrogen, which only produces water as an exhaust...and the enviromentalists will scream it's causing global humidifying, which causes global warming, it's raping the planet, etc., etc., etc...

Looks like the nypd's going to have their hands full, pulling over every motorcycle they see to find if it has the right sticker on the exhaust! This is designed to give officers probable cause for pulling over bikers. they better hire a lot more officers!!!

I just checked the NYC council calander and it seems reason prevailed. Apparently they have pulled bill 416 from the Dec 18 meeting. I researched it and found it has came up a few times prior to this. Any of you NYC riders that have read the Daily News article, remember the names of the people involed when election time comes. We may be a minority but we still count for some votes.

They NYPD has a lot more important problems to worry about other than loud bikes.:bigsmiley33:

Kit Custom there was a new article in todays paper as well refering to the new law, however they said it is still up for a vote on the 18th. Looks like all biker in NYC are in for a problem.

When someone gets a ticket for this let me know and I'll alter my route for next summer's ride.
