Need help with 1969 starter clunk noise

I am new to this forum and can't seem to find how to start a thread so here goes even if I am in the wrong place. Need help.
My 1969 93 inch shovel when starting has a clunk coming from the primary.
I am wondering what is causing it. It is a new sound. It does not have a
compensator sprocket. Could that be the problem?
It had been breaking belts, changed it to a chain primary and now there is this sound. Clunk sounds like its going to break something big. Any ideas?
Many thanks

Welcome to The Forum, needed more info on what inner primary clutch hub set up you have, why no comp sprocket? Is the tranny lined up square?

Welcome to the forum. I have a '68 with belt drive and no compensator. There is a big shock to the primary drive when the starter engages without the compensator. The chain has less give than a belt as well as transmitting noises better. When I had electric start, mine made a noticeable clunk when it engaged. I took the elec. starter off (dumb, dumb, dumb). Also possible that you have a crack somewhere in the starter mount or inner primary. Keep us posted on your findings and progress.
