i have a 2002 ele. glide lookin for a set of new tire ,s what is the diffence i a soft compound vs hard

A hard compound will last longer.
A softer compound will wear faster.
That said if you ride aggressively, or in the rain hard compound tires will limit traction, Not good!

Or, You could think of it this way.

Harder compounds will last longer are well suited to distance or touring bikes.
Softer compounds will be more "grippy", and are a better choice for more "spirited" riding styles.

As has already been said a softer compound will wear quicker and stick better
Although you may need to take into account your local riding conditions in my part of the world it is usually cold and wet and a hard compound tyre is not good so i use a softer compound that is suited to my local conditions
