National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Thumbs Nose at Congress and Discriminates Against Motorcycles

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation has learned from a source at the US Department of Transportation that they have funded the motorcycle only roadside checkpoints.

NHTSA decided to fund the program despite being asked by Congress not to fund the program until the merits were explained. In a letter sent by James Sensenbrenner, along with ten other Members of the House of Representatives last month, Sensenbrenner and his colleagues specifically asked NHTSA to respond to the letter before funding the program, they did not. Read the letter here.

The recipient of the money for the demo project was the Georgia Department of Public Safety, which oversees the day-to-day operation of the Georgia State Patrol. The Georgia State Patrol will conduct a series of roadside motorcycle safety checks in accordance with what was outlined in the Request for Applications. The amount of NHTSA funding is $70,000.00.

"Not only is this an injustice to the motorcyclists of America its a complete waste of taxpayer money." said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the MRF.

A Motor Patrol Sheriffs deputy was photographed on I-4 in Orlando a month or so ago and he was riding with one hand and holding and looking down at a cell phone in the other hand. The Sheriffs departments response, you ask? "He wasn't doing anything against the law"

I have to agree with Joe and Jack, that money could be used for better ends, i.e., driver awareness of motorcyclces sharing the roads, the dangers to the riders presented by the unaware driver.

Boy I'll tell ya, I'm getting really sick and tired of us bikers all being labeled as 1%er's. I'm not saying all, but most traffice cops would drool at the chance of stopping a group of bikers. Now, thru a new law, they can stop and search. Yea, search. It will come down to testing the bike for the pipes being to loud to a helmet search to verify it's DOT. Being singled out isn't fair. We all pay taxes and most of us drive cages. Being singled out because I'm on a Harley should be against the consitution somewhere.

At our last Michigan Patriot Guard mission there were three State Police and two County Sheriffs present. They always take the time to thank us. On the escort we passed many more State Troopers and local Police who stood at attention and saluted as we passed. You can not tell me that they don't understand the difference between a 1% and a veteran or patriot on 2 wheels.
