First bike is a project

Just bought a 79 Sportster that doesn’t run from a friend. It’s my first bike and so far I’m just trying to figure out what I have. The VIN on the engine checks out to a 79 XLS. However, the Carb has a part number 27490-96 and after some research found that it is a 40mm CV carb for a 1200 cc ‘96 to ‘00 model. Is this carb compatible with my engine? The main jet is a 170. So far I tried to start the bike when I first got it. I was able to get it to run as long as I was keeping it throttled.

That is a good carb. for your Ironhead. Disassembly and a thorough cleaning will help you get it running properly. The rubber diaphragm under the domed top is very delicate and rips easily. It is part of the slide and is supposed to stay intact. Air leaks between the carb and intake mount, as well as where intake attaches to heads are also potential air leaks, causing tuning problems.

Welcome to HDT from sunny AZ. Breeze3at advise is spot on, good luck and keep us updated on your progress.
