F or FL History Question?

There are a lot of FL models going back to the first one in 1941; such as:

FL, FLF, FLS, FLEF, FLE, FLH, FLHF, FLHB, FLHFB, FLFB, FLB, FLPF, FLP, FLHS, FLT, FLHC, FLHT, FLTC, FLHTE, FLHTC, FLHS, FLHTCU, FLHR, FLHTUI,
FLHTCI, etc, etc, etc,

In some cases I know the;
C is for Classic,
I for Injected,
U for Ultra
H is for hand,
(second F) is for foot
T is for touring
R is for Roadking
S is for Sport
S is for Softail
S is for “side car” (1952)
Etc
Etc
Etc

For the sake of this discussion, does anyone on the forum know what the basic “F” or “FL” stands for….if any thing. I’d be curious to know.

Please respond.:)
