Exceding Sportster XL1200C GVWR

I have an '09 Sportster XL1200C. I love riding it and now, after having it for a couple years and riding it solo, my wife has decided she wants to ride also, which I think is great. I have a two-up Sundowner seat and have adjusted the shocks to max. She says she feels comfortable on it and so do I, but we are not light-weights. Without revealing who weighs what, I'll just say that our combined weight, fully dressed and ready to ride is approximately 470 pounds. Add the weight of the bike at approx. 575 pounds (wet) and some luggage (50 pounds) and the total weight is around 1100 pounds. I read that when riding a bike, the total weight, including the bike, shouldn't exceed the GVWR, which is 1000 pounds. Am I being overly nervous thinking we need to get a bigger bike for both of us to ride together?

Thanks for any advice.

At the very least, check the load index number of your rear tire. For instance a 130/90-16 TL 67H NWS tire has a load index of 67. An load index of 67=677 lbs.

I am in the same situation as yourself. My Dyna FXDL rear tire has a load index of 79 which will carry 963 lbs.

index 66 = 661 lbs
67=677
68=694
69=716
70=739
71=761
72=783
73=805
74=827
75=853
76=882
77=908
78=937
79=963
80=992

You most definitely don't want to exceed the Manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating!Especially on a regular basis.

Your bike won't stop,won't handle,won't corner,will scrape,will bounce,will wear out quickly and will probably put you into peril because you are asking it to do things it isn't mean't to do.Mate,i think you're being smart,not nervous,for asking the question.However,by asking the question,i'm thinking you already know the answer.

Buy another bike.Or better yet,buy your wife her own bike.
