engine dies at high speed

2004 sportster 1200 custom . when i get on gas engine dies .downshifting dont restart but hitting starter button it starts right up. if it stayed not running i could probally figure it out but,? anyhelp would be aprec....ated

A little more info might help. Any mods? or bone stock. Is this a recent issue?

Start with the basic stuff of checking the battery cable connections at both ends of the cables ensure they are clean and tight

I would check fuel flow or pressure depending on carb/FI.

You might try siphoning some gas from the bottom of the gas tank, look for debris or tank lining.
