my 1998 FLHPI with 15K miles. (fuel injected )starts normally but the ENG light comes on briefly after a sucessful start. i do notice that the time for the fuel injection pump to complete the cycle prior to the ENG light going off prior to startimg takes a tad longer that historically. the bike appears to run normally. it is my understanding that the ENG light is a feature on the police model only. what could this be a precusor to?

The light is telling you there is a code stored from a malfunction. It could even be a bad start with a kickback and is on all models, not just the police models.

The tip that Glider sent you above is very easy to do, and will not take you long. I agree with what Glider says above. Better to check the codes so that you know if there is anything serious before riding it around. Chances are since the light goes out, that it is a historic code caused by one of those aggrivating hard-start backfires. But check it out.
