electrical problem?

i have a 1986 flhtc recently on a ride on a hot day it seemed to lose voltage on the the dash meter and at the same time tach jumped up to 4500 but engine did not rev bike was way down on power battery is new and connections are clean any ideas

Recheck the connections on the battery, clean and tight and load test it new can be bad check all grounds, most important part of any charging system:s

If after checking what Jack suggested, if you are still having problems... Look into checking the charging system... See the self help section.

From your description, it sounds like a bad ground somewhere in the system and it's back feeding through the tach.
