Diagnostic Codes U1016 and U1301

A friend of mine rides a 2004 Softail and is having a problem with it. The diagnostic codes displayed are U1016 and U1301. He tells me that the bike seems to run fine until suddenly it acts as if it has bad gas or a plugged fuel filter. Then, it comes back and runs fine. Anyone have any ideas?

U1016 Loss of ECM Serial Data, Vehicle Speed, Vehicle Inhibit Motion or Power train Security Status TSM/TSSM


U1301 Serial Data Open/High Carb

Sounds like a possible bad connection maybe at the ECM or elsewhere in the Data line on the bike. Intermittent/bad connection will set these codes.
