Custom Built Starter Problem

Having electric start problem with a 1993 custom built. My first time T/S'ing a system with jackshaft. New battery and cables, second starter in couple years. Wiring good all way to st relay and to starter. With the plugs out motor turns over like suppose to, zings right along. Put the plugs in and leave the wires off, hit st button, and it acts like bad connections or low battery. Just clicks and chatters, then will just clunk and wires start to get hot. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Radical Rick

What size engine and what's the compression ratio. Do you have compression releases in the heads?

Don't know size of motor, has 10.5 wisco pistons, no releases.
This problem has just started within the last couple years.
My thought it is going thru stock starters and needs higher torque one?

I would start by cleaning the battery cables and the starter cables. Corrosion or a bad connection would limit the amount of amps going to the starter.
